What is Gond Art?
Gond Art is a folk art form practiced by one of the largest tribes in India with whom it shares its name. The word Gond comes from the Dravidian expression, Kond which means ‘the green mountain’. According to the Gond belief system, each and everything whether it is a hill, river, rock, or tree is inhabited by a spirit and, consequently, is sacred. So the Gond people paint them as a form of respect and reverence. These paintings are a reflection of a human being's intricate connection with the natural world. Traditionally their art was painted on the mud walls of their houses.
For the Gonds, art is a form of prayer. They believe that good fortune befalls those whose eyes meet a good image. Hence their paintings watch over them in everything they do. Gond Paintings are not concerned with realism, perspective, light, or three-dimensionalities. It signifies rather than represents. Since most Gonds are forest dwellers, animals loom large in their imagination.
